The Academy

The Law of the Sea

The Foundation will pursue its ultimate goal of establishing an Academy for the Law of the Sea. This Academy will arrange its main activities to coincide with the sessions of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, with meetings in the spring and autumn.

The work of the Academy will serve to develop academic research, complement academic education and promote dialogue between the academic and business worlds. In courses, seminars, symposia and workshops, particular importance is to be attached to ensuring that all nations - especially the developing countries - are aware of their rights and obligations under the Convention on the Law of the Sea and are able to make full use of the opportunities for access to the dispute settlement procedures.

One of the two annual conferences organised by the Academy will concentrate on examining law of the sea in depth from an academic perspective. Academics, practitioners, leading experts and students will be brought together to promote the scholarly interpretation and application of the Convention on the Law of the Sea. The second conference will focus on practical law of the sea issues of current concern. It will be structured in the form of a dialogue between judges, academics and those working in the maritime economy.

In choosing topics for the Academy's talks, discussions and lectures, the bodies of the Foundation will be guided in particular by their current relevance and global significance.
