The Foundation as an Opportunity

Ole von Beust

Representatives of public life, the maritime economy and academia have combined forces to establish the International Foundation for the Law of the Sea (Internationale Stiftung für Seerecht). Through this Foundation they pledge their support to one of the most vital institutions for peace and justice in the international community: the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg.

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea was established on the basis of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, now in existence for over two decades. Recognising the significance of this "constitution for the oceans", the Foundation, with the backing of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, wishes to support and promote the global theme of maritime law and the activities of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and its judges, with their unique jurisdiction. I am convinced that, by providing initial information, this brochure will focus our attention on the opportunities afforded by participation in the establishment in Hamburg of the International Foundation for the Law of the Sea. The initiative of the founders deserves our full support. I would be delighted if you, too, would actively join us in the establishment and operation of the Foundation.

The schedule also includes maritime-related subjects from economics and natural sciences. Judges from the Tribunal and renowned representatives from academia and maritime commerce serve as lecturers to a carefully selected group of highly motivated participants from around the globe.
